Becoming an SEO: 6 Primary skills you need

Freelancing or working from home is what most of us Pinoys would like to to do and SEO is one of the freelance-work-at-home-jobs that you can do from the benefits of your home. I will give you some pointers on how you can become a search engine marketer.

Here are 6 Primary SEO skills you need to learn:

  1. HTML knowledge – You need to read and practice HTML in order to understand how websites work. You dont need any formal schooling although that would be really helpful. In case you do not have time to enroll, you can learn using the internet.
  2. Usability Know-how – At the least, you need to know where and when to use technologies in order to make your website function properly. One of the basic website usabilty is to always keep your websites navigation bar at the same place on every page of your website.
  3. Writng Skills – If you look at the list of successful internet marketers, most of them are able to write great articles and as the saying goes “content is king”. I beleive that most of us have the writer in us. Practice and expand your writing skills. That’s what I’m doing right now. :)
  4. Design skills – Yes, you need some basic photoshop skills if you want to be a one man army or atleast be able to use, add or edit some parts of your website. You may also hire a freelance website designer if needed. Content is king but Design is Everything!
  5. Self Management – Learn how to manage your time so you can deleiver on time. Never take projects that you can not handle at the given time. This is one lesson I have learned in my freelance years. I lost a client once for not being able to properly manage the number of projects on my plate. You can always coordinate with others if you find it difficult or if you are overflowing with projects.
  6. Marketing Skills – This is the last skill you need right now. Most likely the client will have a marketing plan ready. This may not be an online marketing plan but atleast you’ll get the idea and the main goal of the company.
