Last September 21, 2008 for the first time in my life while sleeping, I had a seizure. Luckily I was at my parent’s house otherwise my Fiance wouldn’t know what to do and would’ve dominated by panic. I never had a seizure before so everybody was asking why the hell did it happen to me. Over the past weeks before the episode I unknowingly had the symptoms of a seizure attack which I mistakenly identified as migrane/ stress/ anxiety.
What is a Seizure?
A seizure is a sudden change in behavior characterized by changes in sensory perception (sense of feeling) or motor activity (movement) due to an abnormal firing of nerve cells in the brain.
What I had was a tonic-clonic seizures: This is the most common type among all age groups and is categorized into several phases beginning with vague symptoms hours or days before an attack. These seizures are sometimes called grand mal seizures.
Day 1: Hospital, Several Tests and CocoLife Health Card
I was rushed to the nearest hospital – Family Care Hospital in Pacita Complex and was given first aid to stabilize my condition. After waking up, I did not have any recollection of what has happened and everything was a blur to me. I was confused and disoriented. Being stabilized, I was transferred to Asian Hospital and Medical Center Alabang to get further emergency aid. I was admitted to a private room and was immediately scheduled for an MRI, EEG and X-Ray – to name a few tests that they ran. Luckily I had my Cocolife Health Insurance with me.
Second Seizure Attack
After giving me some anti-convulsant medication I had 1 more seizure while I was sleeping and again I was disoriented and confused after the episode. The doctors had to double my dose of meds to make sure that the episodes won’t occur again. Luckily the double dosage was effective.
Day 2: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and the Brain Tumor
After resting for a day the hospital staff scheduled me for an MRI, The one that you always see on the TV series House (I’m a big fan of House). It was a boring experience because I had to stay still for quite some time.
After the MRI, The results came out with a 2.5 x 3 something cm left frontal lobe brain tumor. The left frontal lobe controls our motor skills. The doctor recommended an immediate brain surgery otherwise the seizures might occur anytime. Concerened about the cost, I wondered if my insurance can still cover the cost of the Neuro Surgeon and the cost of the Surgery, unfortunately neurologists and neurosurgeons are not covered by any HMO.
Money is No Object?
Cocolife can no longer handle the cost because there is only a couple of thousand left under the 100k limit per illness/yr. That’s because everybody had to be sure that I only get the best facilities and doctors available, after all, we are talking about my brain here
. Anyway, everybody helped and everything was covered and only the doctor was our main concern. The doctors at Asian Hospital were too expensive and the operating room was also way too luxurious.
I give a 2 thumbs up to the staff of Asian Medical Hospital for taking great care of me. It was worth the money.
