4D: Are We Feeling The Crunch

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Yesterday our CEO announced that we are going to have a 4 day workweek effective at the start of our fiscal year Q4. The step is necessary to avoid retrenchment and to reach the new goal of becoming a cash flow positive company. Due to the 4 day work week, employees will temporarily get 20% less than what they are currently earning. Because of this announcement I’m assuming that  a lot of my colleagues  will render their resignation within the week or whenever they find a new job. I wont blame them if they want to leave it’s their choice.  The current situation of our company will be a test loyalty with the company.

I still believe in our company and CEO. I hope I made the right decision of rejecting offers left and right.

Until I see him going bald… I’ll stick with the company. Full steam ahead!

The Ignorance of John Dvorak

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Long URLs are bogus! Tags like “nude” and “naked” are counterfeits! SEO is a big business, and from what I can tell its proponents are modern snake-oil salesmen.

These are the words from an article posted titled - SEO Fiascoes: The Trouble with Search Engine Optimization of John Dvorak a journalist from PCMag.com. Clearly this is a rant for the reason that he did not understand what he is actually doing on optimizing his own blog. Search Engine Optimization is a day in day out work. You cannot learn it in a second or even in day. You may learn the theories but you cannot put them into practice in months before seeing the optimum results of your effort.

The ignorant Mr. Dvorak claims that after changing his url’s into long urls his page views went down drastically but what happen to his bounce rate? did it decreased compared to the previous months? This is one aspect that his post did not mention. There also hundreds of other reasons on why his blog page views went down which you can see on this post from Alison. I am not claioming to be an expert in the field of SEO but I sure know that a logical URL (seo-optimization.html) is better than the default of wordpress (?postID=2009) which means nothing to your target audience and Google. Changing th eurl is not just about making it long, I think its about what you put in them. Tags also wont work when abused or used in the wrong way. There is this delicate balance of doing things onpage seo and onpage seo is just one part of seo which at the moment is not as heavily weighted as before. whats more important now is the off-the-page factors that will really boost your ranking and visibility.

This rant is clearly the sign of ignorance by John Dvorak or this might be a linkbait creating controversy by flaming on the SEO community. So if you want to react on his post and link to him I suggest that you “Nofollow” your links as this might be an SEO tactic and he could be very well inclined in SEO. A very clever post Dvorak if this is a linkbait, You’ve defenitley pushed some buttons here.

Thanks to Benj Arriola for posting the rant on sphinn and linkedIn.

My 2 cents.

12 Counts, 3 Repetitions

Last Sunday, I officially started my workout program. I’ve been wanting to start this 3 years ago. knowing that I used to have a waistline of 28 in. and wiegh around 130 lbs. and now my waistline is freakin 36 in. and I weigh 185 lbs. imagine that increase in just 3 years. We found this gym near our house and it cost very reasonably compared to other fitness centers out there.

Why Did I Started Doing Physical Workout?

  • My hieght is not proportional to my weight
  • I get tired a easily
  • I eat a lot
  • I sit all day in front of a computer
  • I have NO physical activity whatsoever
  • I used to smoke
  • I’m a perfect candidate for heart attack, stroke and cancer.

If you folks are the same as me, I suggest that you do the same. Get on your feet and go to the gym. It doesnt have to be daily, you can do it every other day or once or thrice a week depending on you available schedule. This is something that I’ve learned the hard way after having the operation, Watch what your eat, watch what you drink and watch what you do beacause you’ll never know.

To all the health buffs and iron junkies out there. Any special food diet suggestions?
